FACES IN THE CROWD

Martha Van Voorst, 17, a junior at Sehome High in Bellingham, Wash., broke by three points the world ladies' archery record set in 1967 by Nancy Myrick of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. when she scored 308 out of a possible 360 points at 50 meters.

Jim Tingen, who recently graduated from Grimsley Senior High in Greensboro, N.C., competed on six scholastic state championship teams—three in swimming, two in cross-country and one in baseball. He also won the state low-board diving title twice.

Tom Haley, a senior left-hander at Ritenour High in St. Louis County who ranked 48th in a class of 902, pitched three consecutive no-hitters, beating Parkway West 3-0, River View Gardens 1-0 and Normandy 4-0. He struck out 22 and walked eight.

Janet Ramsey, 16, of Independence, Mo., who carries a 171 bowling average, rolled a 707 series with games of 229, 268 and 210 in the Strike 'n Spare Youth League in her hometown. Janet's previous high game had been 237 and her high series 608.

Robert Lawson, a senior at Toledo Libbey High, broke Jesse Owens' 39-year-old Ohio high school record in the 100-yard dash with a 9.4 at the state championships, won by Libbey. He also won the 220 and anchored the second-place 880-yard relay team.

Billy Matyastik, 17, a senior at University High School in Waco, Texas, defeated Billy Brock of Norfolk (Va.) Academy 7-6, 6-3 to win the USLTA Inter-scholastic Singles Championship at Landon in Bethesda, Md. He did not lose a set in his six matches.
