FACES IN THE CROWD

Arnie Kvarnberg, 19, of Seattle, pitched his team to victory in the Senior Babe Ruth World Series in Monroe, N.C. Undefeated in 32 decisions over three seasons, Kvarnberg set four series records, including most wins (3) and most strikeouts (28).

Robert Lange Jr., 14, of Boulder, Colo., placed first in eight consecutive heats to win the 35th All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron. Lange, who outraced Brice Cross, 12, of Detroit in the finals, received a $7,500 college scholarship for his victory.

Elmer Hohl, of Wellesley, Ontario, defeated defending champion Curt Day in a best of-three-game playoff for the world horseshoe championship in Greenville, Ohio. Hohl, who threw 86.3% ringers, had previously won the world title in 1965 and 1968.

Virginia Allen, 55, won her 19th Syracuse (N.Y.) Women's District Golf championship since 1933, when she was the tournament's first champion. A former state titlist, Mrs. Allen has taken her Bellevue Country Club championship every year since 1955.

Woody Widmor, 28, a .500 hitter for the United Mine Workers baseball team of Blaine, Ohio, singled, doubled and tripled during an inning in which the UMW sent 21 men to bat and scored 16 runs. Widmor's team won the game 22-0 over Fair-point, Ohio.

Everett Bacon, a 1912 football All-America and member of the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame, celebrated his 82nd birthday by shooting 78 at the Maidstone Golf Club in East Hampton, N.Y., one of the 100 toughest courses in the country.
