FACES IN THE CROWD

Tom Douple, a sophomore at Hagerstown Junior College in Maryland, has been running in cross-country events for only two years but has won 11 consecutive 4.2-mile races this season. He has set one course record and led from the start in 10 of the 11.

Harry Huffaker, 32, a Honolulu dentist, became the first person to swim the shark-infested Molokai Channel from Oahu to Molokai when he completed the 26.9-mile crossing in 16¼ hours. He swam at 52 strokes a minute, averaging about 1½ knots.

Bob Healy, 17, a senior goaltender for the Worcester (Mass.) Academy soccer team, has had nine shutouts in 14 New England Prep School league games. With him at the goal, Worcester was 5-1-2 in 1971 and is 6-1-1 in 1972. Last year he recorded live shutouts.

Katie Monahan, 17, of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., won the Hunter Seat Medal Class riding championship against a record 135 juniors at the Pennsylvania National Horse Show in Harrisburg. She also won the best child-rider award for the second straight year.

Ringo Cantillo, a high school student from Cincinnati playing his first year of professional soccer, was named the most valuable player in the American Soccer League. A middle defenseman, he led the Cincinnati Comets to the ASL title in their first season.

Alan Powers, 12, of Reno, Nev., who has been playing golf since he was seven, shot a hole in one on the 176-yard third hole tit Hidden Valley Country Club. To make it official, he finished in the twilight and shot 90 after intending to play only nine holes.
