John Naber, 17, Of Menlo Park, Calif., set a Pacific Association record with a 1:52.5 clocking in the 200-yard backstroke. Naber, a member of the Ladera Oaks Aquatic Club, holds records in the 100-yard backstroke (52.5) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:34.6).
Lu Anne Campanaro, 18, of Little Canada, Minn., outfished 3,400 other anglers to win the St. Paul Winter Carnival Ice Fishing contest at White Bear Lake. Her victory came with the catch of a seven-pound northern. She has been fishing for eight years.
Tommy Mireault, center on the Mite team in the Rochester, N.H. Youth Hockey League, scored nine goals on his ninth birthday, five unassisted. In the first seven games Mireault scored all but eight of his team's 34 goals. He is in his second year of organized play.
Veronica McCDonald, a junior at Davis (Okla.) High, scored the 1,000th point of her basketball career en route to a 36-point game in a 50-40 victory over Healdton in the championship game of a women's tournament. In 18 games she is averaging 26 points.
Jody Brown, a senior at Mariemont High in Cincinnati, scored a clean sweep in women's events at the U.S. Open Archery Championships in Las Vegas, winning the senior competition and 17-and-under Junior Olympic shooting. She was on the winning senior team.
Mickey Crowe, a 6'3" sophomore guard for JFK Prep in St. Nazianz, Wis., had back-to-back games of 61 and 64 points. He has scored more than 40 points in five other games and has been held under 30 only three times while averaging 37.8 points per game.
