Don Duvall, a junior at Denver North High, set a national indoor high school record when he triple-jumped 51'8¼" in a state meet at the Air Force Academy. The jump betters the old mark of 50'¼", set by Olympic long-jump champ Randy Williams in 1970.
Kathy Marlow, 18, of Ogden, Iowa broke the state free-throw record for girls, sinking 81 straight baskets in a regional tournament at Ames. The former record was 69. Marlow, whose high school team finished 23-3, shot 78% from the line in the regular season.
Ray Elliott, 43, of Indianapolis won his 18th YMCA state handball title in South Bend, defeating 24-year-old Bob Nemeth 21-10, 21-13. An engineer, Elliott won all six games in the tournament and has lost the crown only four times since 1952.
Carolyn Sauer, a junior at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, won her third consecutive state intercollegiate badminton championship by beating Maxine Michaud of St. Agatha, Maine 11-3, 13-12. In her three-year varsity career, Sauer has won 41 and lost one.
Bob Solomon, a forward at Wayne State in Detroit, became his school's first three-time MVP, scoring 1,612 career points and leading his basketball team in rebounding for three years. Recruited for baseball, he scored in double figures in 67 of 69 games.
Kevin Lindauer, a senior at Springfield High in Battle Creek, Mich., won the state Class C-D wrestling championship in the heavyweight division, compiling a 45-0 record this season. Also a Class C all-state tackle, Lindauer had 38 pins, including 23 in a row.
