Richard Moss, 8, of San Mateo, Calif., won first place in his age group at the Monterey College Invitational Judo Tournament. Richard defeated 10 boys in a row to win the H Group class, despite sustaining a broken arm during his seventh match.
Jennifer Cox, 14, a freshman at Wawasee High in Syracuse, Ind., took firsts in the uneven bars, vaulting and all-around and second in floor exercise at the state high school girls' meet in Indianapolis, She earned 27 of 28 first-place ribbons during the regular season.
Sheila Patterson, a 6'3" center at Colonel White High in Dayton, Ohio, led her team to a 10-0 season and the city title, averaging 25 points per game. Voted the most outstanding city player, she led her team in rebounds and had a high game of 42 points.
Roy Warren, a senior at Bangor (Maine) High, won the New England interscholastic diving championship with a record 488 points. Three times a state champ, he also swam the anchor leg on his school's winning medley relay team in the state finals.
Ron Norman, a junior at Pembroke (N.C.) State University, has pitched six shutouts in his first eight starts this season. Norman, who is a left-hander, has struck out 100 batters this season and a total of 357 hitters in 245‚Öî innings during his college career.
Mike Gaffney, 17, a wrestler at Jesuit High in New Orleans, compiled a 79-0 record in four years of competition, including 62 wins by pins. A three-time city champion, Gaffney won the state 119-pound title twice and was voted city MVP for the 1972 season.
