FACES IN THE CROWD

Jon Jepsen, swimming coach at Munster (Ind.) High, was selected state high school coach of the year after Munster's record-breaking win in the state finals. In his four-year career his teams had a 47-5 mark, including an undefeated record this season.

Kelly Bellerose, 8-year-old from Newburyport, Mass., led his baseball team in the Pioneer League to two straight championships by posting 25 consecutive victories. In his career he has pitched five no-hitters, eight one-hitters and six two-hitters.

Diane Demorest, 15, of Friday Harbor, Wash., won the first state pentathlon for women in a meet at Lacey. Placing in the top three in all five events, three of which she had never competed in before, she totaled 2,988 points and won by 43 in an 11-woman field.

Jim Lopez, a real estate developer from Coral Gables, Fla., landed three potential fly rod world records in Bermuda. Using a 15-pound tippet, he caught an 81-pound Allison tuna. On a 10-pound tip he took blackfin tuna weighing 22 pounds, 10 ounces and 24 pounds.

Marlin Van Horn, a freshman at Selinsgrove High School in Pennsylvania, broke the national frosh record in the javelin with a toss of 210'7". He managed to better the listed mark by 12'4". No other freshman has been known to throw over 200 feet.

Gary Kite, a senior at Graham High in St. Paris, Ohio, pitched his team to the state Class AA baseball championship. With an 11-2 record, which included two no-hitters and a .57 ERA, he averaged 10.8 strikeouts per game. He also compiled a .386 batting average.
