FACES IN THE CROWD

Gregg Lambdin, a sophomore at Galveston (Texas) Ball High, set a national age-group record for 15-year-olds in the high jump. Recovering from a broken foot, Lambdin bettered the old mark by half an inch, jumping 6'9 during the Texas Southern U. relays.

Sue Bird, 12, of Palos Verdes, Calif., set three national age-group marks for 11- and 12-year-old girls in a swimming meet at Santa Clara. She swam the 200-meter individual medley in 2:33.8, the 50 backstroke in 32.5 and the 100 backstroke in 1:10.4.

Bob Hetherington, minister at Trinity Episcopal Church of Buffalo, captured the men's singles in the National Public Parks tennis tournament. He defeated Russell Watts, of L.A., 6-3, 6-2, then teamed with Charley Garfinkel to win the men's doubles 6-2, 6-3.

Dawn Monroe, 17, of Yakima, Wash., threw a perfect game to lead her team to the women's Northwest Softball League championship. With a 12-0 season record and a 0.33 ERA, she also pitched a no-hitter to give the Yakima Stealers their third straight title.

Chris Fallon, 15, of South Bend, Ind., pitched his Babe Ruth League team to its second straight title and won the state 16-and-under boys' tennis title. He pitched four wins in seven days, batted .570, and won the tennis title the morning of the last baseball game.

Elise Burgin, 11, of Baltimore, won both the city's 16- and 18-and-under tennis championships. She defeated 17-year-old Jean Shapiro 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in the older division, and lost only 26 games in 18 sets. Last year she was runner-up in the Eastern Shore Girls' Open.
