Ricky Brockway, a junior shortstop at Pan American in Edinburg, Texas, set an NCAA season record for stolen bases by filching his 60th (in 65 attempts) against Hardin-Simmons, breaking the mark of 59 set in 1971 by Washington State's Bobby Waits.
Janice Ann Martin, a junior at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, and DAVID PHILIP, a senior at Bernard M. Baruch College in New York City, won the women's and men's singles events in the third annual Intercollegiate Table Tennis championships at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. One of 15 regional finalists in his division, Philip went undefeated in round-robin competition en route to the title, his first intercollegiate championship in four bids. Martin, who qualified for the finals in her first attempt, had a 14-1 tournament record.
Tom wassom, a senior at East Tennessee State, was named to the National Rifle Association's All-America team for the fourth straight year. Wassom, a former national ROTC champion, currently holds or shares 12 U.S. open and civilian records.
Phil McMorrow, a junior at Brown, led the Bruins to the Ivy League rugby championship, scoring four tries in victories over Dartmouth (25-12), Yale (20-3) and Princeton (28-4). McMorrow has 24 tries this spring as Brown has built a 16-2 record.
Laurie Griffin, of Ithaca (N.Y.) College, was promoted from coxswain of the men's freshman crew to the men's varsity and directed it to a 2½-length victory over Buffalo State and the University of Buffalo in the Dillingham Cup Regatta on Cayuga Lake Inlet.
