Phil Partridge, 63, a civil engineer from New York City, set world age-group records in all five throwing events (discus, shotput, javelin, hammer and 35-pound weight) in one day at a Masters meet in Raleigh, N.C., the first time this feat has been done.

Tracy McDonald, 13, a freshman at Mira Costa High in Manhattan Beach, Calif., won the 13-and-under singles title—which she previously took at age 11—and the doubles championship at the National Junior Badminton tournament in Seattle.

Darrell Madden, of Salem, N.H., became the 13th jockey in U.S. horse-racing history to ride 3,000 winners when he guided Chambertin 2nd to victory at Narragansett Park. The 51-year-old Madden won his first race 34 years and about 21,000 mounts ago.

Steve Goss, 13, an eighth-grader at Earl Warren Junior High in Castro Valley, Calif., hoisted 126.8 pounds in the clean and jerk at the Pacific Association of the AAU Junior Olympic weight lifting championships, to set an age-group record in the 93-pound class.

Mary Lou Piatek, 12, of Whiting, Ind., won the 14-and-under girls' singles title in the Public Parks Indoor tennis championships at Elmhurst, Ill. to extend her winning streak to 35 straight matches. She has not lost a set in six consecutive tournaments.

Ralph Welborn, 32, a junior at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, Ore., rolled 1,987 for 10 games to win the national collegiate all-events title on the American Bowling Congress lanes in Indianapolis. Welborn carries a 190 average.
