FACES IN THE CROWD

Jim Streater, 16, a sophomore at Sylva-Webster High in Sylva, N.C., played shortstop and batted .475 to pace his baseball team to the state AA championship while also running on the school track team. His best times were 9.9 in the 100-yard dash and 22.2 in the 220.

Diana Chalfie, 14, of Indianapolis, placed first in 10 events at the Jordan YMCA Invitational swim meet. She took gold medals in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter freestyle, 100 and 200 backstroke, 100 and 200 butterfly, the 200 individual medley and two relays.

Becki Hamblin, 11, of Roy, Utah, who has been tumbling for only a year and a half, won the 11-12-year-old age-group title and placed second in the open class of the World Age-Group Tumbling and Trampoline Championships held in San Francisco.

Craig Meyers, 10, totaled 40 goals and 13 assists in 25 games for the Annandale (Va.) Boys' Club's Red Rebels soccer team. Meyers led the Rebels to the Fairfax County league title, the Metropolitan D.C. Soccer Cup and the Brick Town, N.J. soccer championship.

Wayne Jackson, 39, of Hampton, Va., a two-time state amateur titlist, won the Peninsula Amateur Golf Championship for the 10th consecutive year—and record 11th time—shooting a one-under-par 143 for 36 holes over the Newport News (Va.) municipal course.

John E. Dobroth, 33, a deputy district attorney in Ventura, Calif., bettered the world high-jump record for his age group with a leap of 6'10¼" at the Senior Olympics track meet at UC at Irvine. The old mark of 6'8" was set in 1970 by Britain's Crawford Fairbrother.
