FACES IN THE CROWD

Amy Tubis, 15, of Miami Lakes, Fla., won the Ail-Around championship at the National AAU Junior Olympic gymnastics competition for 15-to-18-year-olds in Lincoln, Neb. She finished first in vaulting, floor exercise, balance beam and uneven parallel bars.

Roy Hamilton, 17, was selected from 6,000 prep athletes as the outstanding performer in the seventh annual Watts Summer Games in Los Angeles. A senior at Verbum Dei High, Hamilton led his basketball team in scoring and assists as it took the championship.

Possum, 8, an 800-pound burro from Arvada West, Colo., won the 25th World Championship Burro Race in Fairplay, Colo. Possum carried 33 pounds of mining equipment 28 miles up London Mountain and back to Fairplay in four hours, 14 minutes.

Bryan E. Haas, 18, a graduate of Franklin Senior High in Reisterstown, Md., ended his final prep season with a 0.00 ERA, a 7-0 record and 105 strikeouts in 52 innings. A .400 hitter, he led his team to its fourth straight Baltimore County Western Division title.

John Crews, 54, a physician from Oak Ridge, Tenn., broke three freestyle age-groups swimming records at the National AAU Masters meet in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Crews swam 200 yards in 2:12.36, the 500 in 5:58.93 and the 1,650 in 21:21.87.

Mike Malaska, 20, was the first amateur in 25 years to win the Utah Open golf tournament. The Weber State junior from Salt Lake City had rounds of 70, 69, 69 and 74 over the par-72 Ogden Country Club course to win the title by one stroke over pro John Jackson Jr.
