
FACES IN THE CROWD
Lynne Giles paced her team, the Redskinettes, to a 9-0 season in the Beltsville (Md.) Calverton girls' flag football league, scoring 21 touchdowns and gaining 1,084 yards in 70 rushing attempts. Lynne, a 10th-grader, also caught seven passes, six for touchdowns.
John Bunch, of Elkins (Ark.) High, gained 608 yards on 38 carries and scored five touchdowns in his team's 74-0 rout of Winslow High. His rushing total broke the recognized prep record of 520 yards set in 1953. Bunch closed the season with 2,237 yards in 10 games.
Tina Sloan and Ronnie Maurek are the first full-time women's coaches at Temple University. Sloan will coach field hockey, lacrosse and badminton, while Maurek will direct the basketball and softball teams. Sloan previously coached basketball at Lincoln University and in college was a member of the U.S. touring lacrosse squad as well as right wing on the All-College field hockey team. Maurek has been a part-time coach on the Temple staff. Both women are full-time instructors in the university's College of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
Richard Hunz, a sophomore at Skagway High, covered a 2.5-mile course in 12:20 to win the southeast Alaska High School cross-country championship. He then placed eighth at the state meet to earn All-Alaska honors in his first season of competition.
Ralph Coulter, 6, of San Jose, Calif., won the kindergarten hammer throw, 75-yard run and shuttle run, was second in sit-ups, soft-ball throw and 50-yard run, and won the overall championship on points at Noddin Elementary School's annual field day.
