FACES IN THE CROWD

Greg Joy, a University of Texas at El Paso freshman from Vancouver, British Columbia, flopped 7'4" at the Western Athletic Conference indoor championships in Albuquerque, the best indoor high jump ever by a collegian. Joy's previous best was 7'2½".

Steve Castellan, a 6'9" senior at St. Anselm's Abbey School in Washington, D. C, scored 54.1% of his basketball team's points this season, averaging 38.5 points, 25 rebounds and 10 blocked shots a game. He led St. Anselm's to a 20-1 record.

Tom Scotton, a Bucknell freshman from Trevose, Pa., completed his first collegiate wrestling season with a 14-0 record in the 118-pound class. Scotton was the team's top scorer, earning 73 points by virtue of three pins, three forfeits and 10 decisions.

Julia Shivner, a senior guard on the Springboro (Ohio) High girls' basketball team, averaged 35.5 points, 7.2 steals and 4.9 assists in 11 games this season. In three previous seasons she averaged 28.5, 25.4 and 31.3 points. Her game high this year was 45.

Phil Mahre of White Pass, Wash, won the giant slalom title at the U.S. National Alpine Ski championships in Mission Ridge, Wash. It was his first competition in 15 months because of a twice-broken right leg. Mahre was second to his twin Steve in the slalom.

Hal Fishman, 36, a Los Angeles television newscaster, flew a twin-engine Aerostar from Santa Monica to Sacramento and back at an average speed of 305 mph to set an international aviation record. Fishman now holds eight speed and altitude marks.
