FACES IN THE CROWD

Peter Mumford, a freshman at Champlain College in Burlington, Vt., led his school to the national junior-college invitational skiing championship at Great Gorge, N.J. Mumford won the giant slalom and downhill and was third in the slalom in the three-day event.

Charles Henery, a senior at Neligh (Neb.) High, posted a 27-0 record in the heavyweight wrestling class this season and was the state champ for a second consecutive year. Henery had 23 straight pins in the regular season, wrestling an average of 1.22 minutes per match.

Cindy Hiester, a junior at West Chester (Pa.) State College, set a pool record for both men and women in three-meter diving with a 284.55 in a home meet against the Princeton women's team. Co-captain of her team, she is All-America in three-meter competition.

Dan Doellman, a 6'7" senior forward at Roger Bacon High in Cincinnati, scored 47 points in his final regular-season game, giving him the city scoring title with 483 points, a 26.7 average and the school's career scoring record. His postseason average was 23 points.

Rod Berry, a freshman at Redwood High in Larkspur, Calif., set a world record in the three-mile run for boys 14 and under (15:03.8) in a meet at the College of San Mateo. Berry, who is 5'4" and 100 pounds, was undefeated in the cross-country season.

Ginny Akabane, 28, a legal assistant from Rochester, N.Y. and two-time Canadian champion, won the U.S. national women's squash racquets singles championship by defeating Barbara Maltby of Jenkintown, Pa., 17-15, 16-17, 13-16, 15-11, 15-11, in Rochester.
