
FACES IN THE CROWD
Kari Lewis, 10, of Scottsdale, Ariz., took the all-round title for the second straight year at the Girls' State Gymnastic Meet in Tempe, winning the balance beam competition, coming in third in floor exercise and sixth on the uneven parallel bars.
Robby Clark, a senior at Poquoson (Va.) High, led his track team to a 111-25 triumph over Mathews High by scoring as many points as the opposing team. He won the long jump (20'10"), triple jump (40'1") and the 100 (10.7), 220 (24.4) and 440 (55).
Debbie Kinney, a senior at Weedsport (N.Y.) High who swam on the boys' team, won the 500-yard freestyle in every dual meet this season. She also won the 200- and 500-yard free Sec. III B titles and was the first girl ever named to the boys' All-Conference team.
Louis (Bo) Mallard, 64, athletic director and teacher at Roosevelt High, retires next month after 38 years in the Gary, Ind. public school system. Mallard coached teams to state titles in three sports: track ('51, '52, '54), cross-country ('62) and basketball ('68).
Mike Gerard, 14, a freshman at Terra Linda High in San Rafael, Calif., won the men's title at the U.S. indoor archery tournament in Harrisburg, Pa. Mike, the youngest archer ever to capture the national title, scored 1,441 out of a possible 1,500 points.
Jim Barbe, a sophomore shortstop for Madison College in Harrisonburg, Va., is hitting .418 and has 10 homers and 49 RBIs in 30 games. During one five-game span, Barbe went 15 for 21 and hit six home runs, two of which were grand slams.
