FACES IN THE CROWD

Bonnie Berning, a senior at Burnsville (Minn.) High, won her third consecutive all-around title at the state girls' gymnastic meet. Bonnie placed first in vaulting, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise and led her team to a tie for the state title.

Jeff Rolan, a Sophomore at the University of Utah, took the 100-yard butterfly in 48.953 at the NCAA championships at Cleveland, thereby becoming the first swimmer in the history of the school and the Western Athletic Conference to win an NCAA swimming title.

Scott Beard, 13, an eighth-grader at Westport High in Louisville, became the youngest person to win a major high school golf tournament in Kentucky, with a two-over-par 74 in the Kentucky Invitational at Seneca Golf Course. Scott started playing five years ago.

Otis Foster, a junior first baseman for the High Point (N.C.) College baseball team, set a school record by hitting in 26 straight games. In 37 games this season, the 6'1", 215-pound Foster was batting .488 with 64 RBIs, 23 home runs and 34 extra base hits.

Tim Davis, a senior at Shawnee Mission (Kans.) West High, won the interscholastic division of the mile (4:16.4) and two mile (9:12.5) at the Kansas Relays. Tim also anchored the first-place sprint medley relay team, running his 880 leg in 1:57.4.

Tom Kaucheck, 75, a retired pressman from Takoma Park, Md., set a national record for senior citizens' duckpin bowling by recording a 207 game that included five straight strikes and led to a 480 series. Kaucheck currently has a 115 and 116 average in two leagues.
