
FACES IN THE CROWD
Debra Iwaniak, a phys ed major at Buffalo's Canisius College, rolled six straight strikes in her final game of 246 to beat Joy Spurgeon and win the women's national intercollegiate bowling title in Indianapolis by 45 pins. Her nine-game total was 1,697.
Len Bourdet, 49, baseball coach at Fresno (Calif.) City College for 17 years, registered his 400th win with a 3-2 defeat of College of the Sequoias. Bourdet has coached his team to four state championships and 10 conference titles and has a .704 winning percentage.
Lisa Kirk, a senior at Crater High in Central Point, Ore., became the state high school girls' javelin record holder with a throw of 151'5" in a dual meet with Del Norte (Calif.) High. She also set the school record in the discus at 137'11¼" earlier this year.
Bruce Young, 18, who holds every swimming record at Decatur Central High in Indianapolis, won the 200-yard individual medley (1:59.816) and the 100-yard backstroke (55.920) at the state championships. Bruce has nine conference and eight sectional titles.
Alex Tam of the University of Texas and Barbara Taschner of the College of Lake County (Grayslake, Ill.) took individual honors at the National Intercollegiate Table Tennis Championships at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Tam defeated Greg Gingold of the University of Southern Florida 16-21, 21-14, 21-13 and 21-12. Taschner beat Jean Varker of Southwest Missouri State 18-21, 21-18, 9-21, 23-21 and 21-16. Thirty-two finalists competed at La Crosse, surviving elimination rounds for 956 colleges and universities.
