FACES IN THE CROWD

Kathy McMillan, a junior at Hoke County High in Raeford, N.C., set state records in the long jump (20'2½"), 100 (11.0) and 220 (24.9) in the girls' track and field championships. Kathy also anchored her school's record-setting 880 relay (1:44.0).

John Walentschka, 14, of Sacramento, Calif., set an all-city junior high school record in the mile (4:31.5) and the 880 (2:03.5) in a city meet. An eighth-grader at Peter Lassen Junior High, John defeated his closest opponent in the mile by nearly 300 yards.

Wilson Gibbins, 18, of Huntington, W. Va., has been champion or co-champion for an unprecedented three straight years in state high school chess competition. Undefeated once again this year in Charleston, Wilson is 18-0 in tournament play.

Dave Cottle, Salisbury (Md.) State sophomore attackman, had 50 goals and 51 assists in 13 regular-season lacrosse games. In leading his team to a 12-2 record, he became the third person in intercollegiate competition to score more than 100 points in a season.

Lynn Howell, an East Tennessee State senior and a two-time All-America, won the open and women's titles at the national intercollegiate small-bore rifle competition, scoring 290 of 300. Lynn paced East Tennessee to its third consecutive national title.

Russell Clark, a sophomore righthander for Mississippi Gulf Coast Junior College in Perkinston, had a 12-1 record this season, including two no-hitters. He allowed two earned runs in 95 innings for an ERA of 0.21. His school won its 10th straight state JC title.
