FACES IN THE CROWD

Stewart Thorn-Burgh, 14, of Charleston, Ill., set three national weight-lifting records at an AAU Junior Olympic meet in his hometown. He snatched 135 pounds, then cleaned and jerked 175 pounds for a 310 total, all new marks in the 103-pound division.

Melanie Kyler, 19, softball pitcher for Golden West College in Huntington Beach, Calif., led her team to the Community College World Series title in Omaha with two one-hitters and a perfect game in the 22-0 final win over Northeastern Colorado.

Steve Kemp, a junior All-America outfielder for USC, finished the season with a .435 batting average, 31 points better than the school record set in 1953. Kemp also tied the Trojan mark for triples (eight) and led the team in home runs (13), RBIs (67) and runs (53).

Murl Bowen, 40, baseball coach of Asher (Okla.) High, has directed his teams to a record 10 straight state "B" titles. In 16 years at Asher, Bowen's teams have won 13 state championships, five seconds and an overall record of 560-105 in the "A" and "B" classes.

Hilary Noden, a junior at Hopewell Valley (N.J.) High, ran a 4:56.8 mile, tops in the East this year for high school girls. Hilary is three-time state girls' high school champion in both cross-country and the mile and is undefeated in interscholastic competition.

Mike Carter, 16, of Albuquerque, N. Mex., won both the 100- and 220-yard dashes on a rain-soaked track at the state high school championships. His 9.7 for the 100 tied the state record for his age, and he ran the 220 in 21.9. Mike also has long-jumped 22 feet.
