FACES IN THE CROWD

John Whittemore, 75, of Santa Barbara, Calif., recorded national age-group marks in the 600-gram javelin (72'1"), 12-pound hammer (76'1"), one-kilo discus (95'5½"), the eight-pound shotput (29'6"), 100-meter dash (18.4) and high jump (3'8") in Van Nuys.

Vince Parrette of Shawnee Mission (Kans.) South High, set a national senior boys' Junior Olympics triple jump record of 50'3¼", exceeding the previous mark by 3'1". Vince is also state champion in the 180-yard low hurdles (19.7) and long jump (23'2½").

Mitch Mooney, 17, of Seaside, Ore., is the first golfer to win the state high school, junior and amateur championships in the same year. Mitch, the youngest player to win the amateur in its 72-year history, defeated Randy Mahar 1-up in the 36-hole final.

Sandy Gilson of Wilmington, Del. ended her high school tennis career with a 66-2 record and three state interscholastic titles in four years. Sandy has also won the girls' 18-and-under state championship four years in a row—every time she entered.

Tammy Jean Easley, 12, of Jackson, La., had the third-highest batting average (.511) and hit four home runs (two grand slams) in the otherwise all-boy Dixie Youth Baseball League. Tammy Jean, a shortstop and pitcher, was selected to the all-star team.

Bunky LaBella, a junior, led Central Catholic High of Norwalk to the Western Connecticut Conference baseball championship, setting a record for hits (34) and batting a league-leading .473. Bunky was the league all-star second baseman and city MVP.
