FACES IN THE CROWD

Joe Neal, a senior at South Sumter High in Bushnell, Fla., won his third straight state high school long-jump championship with a leap of 23'11½", a Florida prep record. Joe has run the 100 in 9.8, thrown the discus 139 feet and put the shot 43 feet.

Bill Bordley, a junior at Bishop Montgomery High in Torrance, Calif., led the Knights to the state Interscholastic Federation southern sectional 3-A title, winning all five playoff games. Bill pitched 35 straight innings without allowing an earned run.

Sharon Duffey, a freshman, broke the Penn State single-season scoring record in women's lacrosse with 38 goals in 10 games; the previous record of 26 goals was set in an eight-game season. Duffey also had 11 assists and was named to the national team.

Luis Martinez, a 7-year-old from Glen Burnie, Md., set a national age-group record by running 5,000 meters in 21:33.2 during an allcomers meet at Catonsville Community College. Luis, who runs 15 miles a week, bettered the 4-year-old mark by 1.47.

Thomas Picard, 12, of Williamstown, Mass., pitched his second no-hitter of the year, this time by striking out all 18 batters as his Rotary Club team routed Williams Co-op 14-0 in a six-inning Little League game. Thomas posted a 5-2 record this season.

Richard T. Beebe, 73, professor of medicine at Albany (N.Y.) Medical College and 18-handicapper, used a six-wood for a hole in one on the 146-yard 15th of Schuyler Meadows Club in Loudonville. It was the fourth time Beebe has aced the same hole.
