Ed Preisler, a 64-year-old Cleveland businessman, shot a 54-hole score of 222 to win the Sixth Annual Stroke Play Golf Championship in Edinboro, Pa. Preisler, the defending titleholder, won over a field of 125 players from nine states.
Jeff Roberts, 11, of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., led his Little League team to its third straight regional title. In 20 games he batted .803, hit 12 home runs, knocked in 54 runs and had an 8-0 record as a pitcher, including two no-hitters, one of which was a perfect game.
Lee Roy Smith, 17, of Del City, Okla., added the national U.S. Wrestling Federation 132-pound junior title to a list of championships that includes the national AAU freestyle. He was 5-0 in Bulgaria during an Oklahoma all-star high school tour.
Ann Raugh, 10, of Hickory, N.C., set six state age-group swim records at the Eastern Invitational in Greensboro: 100 backstroke (1:22.9), 100 free (1:11.2), 100 breast-stroke (1:31), 100 fly (1:20.2), 200 free (2:36.6), 200 IM (2:50.1).
Kathleen Costello, 17, of Lafayette, Calif., set national high school girls' records in the mile (4:53.5) and half-mile (2:09.2) at the state championships in San Diego. In a boys' dual meet she had previously recorded unofficial times of 4:51.1 and 2:08.9.
Robert Paxton, a senior at Trinity University, hit a record 549 targets out of 550 in winning the high overall title at the National Skeet Shooting Association World Championships in San Antonio. He fired perfect scores in the .410-, 20-and 12-gauge events.
