FACES IN THE CROWD

Purnell Ayers, a junior on the Cape Henlopen High basketball team in Lewes, Del., set a state scoring record of 1,540 points in three years. Ayers had 23 points and 21 rebounds in a 73-71 win over P.S. du Pont, which gave the Vikings their second straight state title.

Toril Forland, 21, of the University of Utah, won the combined Alpine title at Boyne Mountain, Mich. in the first-ever Women's National Collegiate Ski championships. Her slalom and giant slalom wins enabled Utah to place second to Middlebury.

Kevin Pedersen and Alex DeCubas, seniors at Miami Palmetto, ended their high school wrestling careers as Class AAAA state champions in their respective weight divisions, and led the Panthers to the Florida team title. Pedersen, at 109 pounds, had a career record of 63-1 in two years of varsity competition. DeCubas, at 189 pounds, compiled a three-year record of 78-1, including the 1974 state title. Undefeated in 33 meets this season, each contributed 17½ points to the record total of 85½ scored by the Panthers at the state meet.

Robin Hampton, 17, of Sandston, Va., became the first female in the state and the second in the American Junior Bowling Congress to bowl a 300 game (during a 650 series, in which her other games were 169 and 181). Robin averages 163 and 171 in two leagues.

Frank Knott, 75, of Golden Valley, Minn., won eight International Senior Olympic Speed Skating gold medals. At Lake Placid he took the outdoor 200-, 500-, 1,000-and 1,500-meter titles and at Long Beach, N.Y. the 200-, 400-, 800-and 1,500-meter indoor events.
