FACES IN THE CROWD

Bruce Kimball, 12, became the youngest male ever to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Diving Trials when he finished ninth at the National AAU Senior Men's 10-meter competition in Cleveland. His sister VICKI, 15, placed seventh in the women's platform finals and is the youngest woman to qualify this year for the Olympic Trials. Both divers are coached by their father, the University of Michigan's Dick Kimball, a three-time All-America who coached 1972 Olympic gold medalist Micki King and silver medalist Dick Rydze.

Tom Pitchford, the coach of the Arlington (Ill.) High tennis team, has guided the undefeated Cardinals to 103 consecutive victories, 10 straight Mid-Suburban League Championships and 12 district titles. Three of his doubles teams have won state championships.

Linda Baily, a junior at East Tennessee State, has been named to the National Rifle Association All-America first team for the second year in a row. She is the intercollegiate International Shooting Union small-bore champ and had the highest score of any ROTC shooter.

David Collis, 15, a sophomore at Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach, Calif., was a triple winner at the National Junior Badminton championships in San Diego, taking the 15-and-under singles, doubles and mixed-doubles titles. His sister LAURIE, 13, an eighth-grader at the Hermosa Beach Middle School, matched her brother's performance by winning the same events in the 13-and-unders. The Collises are the first brother-and-sister act to win the three events in the same year in the 30-year history of the tournament.
