Frank Pollard Jr., 19, a senior at Meridian High, a class B school, became the highest scorer in the history of the Texas high school track meet, winning the discus (154'9"), the shot (56'3½"), the 100 (9.9) and the 220 (21.8). His sprint-relay team also placed fourth.

Chris Kinard, of Pasadena, Calif., won the U.S. Men's Closed Badminton Singles Championship for the third time in five years. Kinard defeated San Diego's Ray Park in the finals in Philadelphia 6-15, 15-10, 15-8. Kinard also won the title in 1972 and 1974.

Don Lindelof, 17, won the lightweight division of the Northeast Tea & Arm Wrestling championships in Minneapolis, then challenged heavy champ Lonny Barnum to a tug-off. He spotted Barnum 50 pounds and eight inches but pinned him in eight seconds.

Donnie Whiting, a 12-year-old righthander from Titusville, Fla., pitched a perfect six-inning Little League game, striking out all 18 batters. Three times this year he has struck out 16 or more batters in a game. Donnie has also been an all-star shortstop the past two years.

Matt Franco, 6, of Thousand Oaks, led his soccer team to a 15-0 record and the Southern California Area title by scoring 43 goals in 10 regular-season matches and 12 goals in the four-game playoff. Matt personally outscored all but two of the 36 teams in his division.

Gwen Smith, a senior at Conroe High, is the first Texas schoolgirl to win four straight state track championships. She set a national high school 220 record each of the past four years. Gwen was unbeaten in the 220 in 44 meets and led Conroe to three state titles.
