CARL WILLIAMS
WEST COLUMBIA, TEXAS
At the state Class AAA meet in Austin, Carl, 17, became the top sprinter in Texas high school history by winning the 100 in 9.2 and the 200 in 20.9, breaking marks held by Gregory Edmonds (9.3) and 1976 Olympian Johnny Jones (21.0).

RALEIGH, N.C.
Julie, 18, ran a 4:43.1 mile in the state high school girls' championships in Raeford, bettering the national mark for high schoolers by 3.7 seconds. Competing for Cardinal Gibbons High, Julie also won the state title in the 880 with a time of 2:16.6.

SETAUKET, N.Y.
A senior attackman on the University of Massachusetts lacrosse team, Spooner scored at least one point in every game he played, concluding his career with 275 points (134 goals, 141 assists), to break the school record by 112 points.

CARLISLE, PA.
A 30-year-old traffic administrator for United Telephone, Hrip won his fifth straight state VFW golf title in Indiana, Pa. A one handicapper, Hrip topped a field of 297, shooting 73-73-75—221 and winning by six strokes.

GORDON JONES
ST. AUGUSTINE, FLA.
A 21-year-old senior, Jones led Flagler College to the NAIA tennis title, defeating Carlos Behar of Presbyterian College 7-6, 7-6 for the singles crown and teaming with Jim Twigg for the doubles championship. Jones had a 35-2 singles season.

KATHY ROSENBERY
NEWPORT BEACH, CALIF.
Rosenbery, a freshman at Golden West College, pitched the Rustlers to their third straight AIAW community college fast-pitch softball crown with a 25-4 record and a 0.55 ERA. Kathy didn't allow an earned run in 21 tournament innings.
