As an 18-year-old junior, Joe pitched consecutive no-hitters to lead Manchester Memorial High to the state large-school baseball championship. The first was an 8-0 victory over Concord; the second, a 4-0 defeat of Trinity, clinched the title.
Gary, 13, made holes in one on three consecutive days. At Parmore in New Paris he aced the 188-yard 9th hole. The next day, he aced the 115-yard 7th hole. His third came on the 140-yard 5th hole at South Shore in New Syracuse.
While a 16-year-old sophomore at Rockford Parkway High, Bev broke her own state shotput record with a toss of 43'2¾" at the state Class A meet in Columbus. Bev, who finished second in the event last year, improved her old mark by 2'3".
MARY BETH PHELAN
Phelan, 26, won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:12.53 in the 25-29 age group at the AAU Masters short-course championships for the second straight year. She was a co-captain of Indiana's 1972 Big Ten champion women's swim team.
Whitehead, 21, a catcher, set seven school batting records and led Valdosta State to its second straight Division II World Series. Among his records: average (.404), home runs (22), RBIs (72) and slugging percentage (.839).
As a senior at Presentation Academy, Bev, 17, defeated Amy Dougherty of Sacred Heart Academy 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 to win the state girls' singles championship for the fourth straight year. Amy was runner-up for the third year in a row.
