Smith, a 6', 185-pound tailback, finished the season with 1,600 yards rushing in nine games to become the top ground-, gainer among rushers at the state's large schools. The Kankakee Westview High senior scored 25 touchdowns.

ZEELAND, MICH.
A Texas Women's University sophomore, Arendsen led the U.S., represented by the Raybestos Brakettes of Stratford, Conn., to the women's world Softball title in El Salvador. In five games, she pitched three no-hitters and gave up no runs.

SOMERVILLE, MASS.
Rogoff, 25, a Ph.D. candidate in economics at MIT, was named grandmaster by the International Chess Federation. Only 142 living players, 14 of them U.S. citizens, have received such recognition, the game's highest short of world champion.

CAROL KELLEHER
ST. LOUIS
For the third straight year, Kelleher, 29, a territory manager for a food company, led the St. Louis Steelers to the National Touch Football League women's title. In four tournament games, she completed 94 of 147 passes for 11 TDs.

PHOENIX
Ward, 37, a vice-president for a development company, broke a Western Bass Association record by four pounds, four ounces when he caught seven bass totaling 51 pounds, six ounces at the Wahweap-Lake Powell tournament in Utah.

TINA BAHR
INTERNATIONAL FALLS, MINN.
Two days before her 17th birthday Tina won the Minnesota girls Class AA high school cross-country championship in a state-record 11:06.4 over a 3,200-meter course. The Falls High junior finished the season unbeaten in nine meets.
