Ney, 18, a diesel fuel attendant, defeated Grover Clanton of Aurora, Colo. to win the 12th annual U.S. Open Darts Championships in Washington, D.C. He will represent the U.S. in the News of the World grand finals in England on May 31.

Mary, a 13-14 age-group national champion in three-meter springboard diving, received a perfect score of 10 for a forward dive (layout) at a meet at Fort Dodge High. She is believed to be the first diver in Iowa history to receive a perfect score.

CAMBRIDGE, MASS.
Beckford, a freshman at Harvard and a Junior Olympic champion in the 1,500-meter run, turned in a 4:37.00 indoor mile at the CYO Nationals in College Park, Md., making her the eighth-fastest woman in the world on an indoor track.

Frank, 16, established an American 19-and-under age-group record in the 123-pound weight class when he dead-lifted 440 pounds at the AAU-Allegheny Mountain Association powerlifting championships in Slippery Rock, Pa.

Jay, a senior 126-pound wrestler at Meyers High and a two-time state champion, pinned two opponents while winning the outstanding wrestler award at the Easton Area holiday tournament. His record over the last 2½ seasons is 79-2.

Nigel, 14, twice runner-up for the under-17 world chess title, scored eight of 15 possible points at the International Computers Ltd. Championships at Hastings, Sussex to become the youngest world International Master in history.
