SOCCER—NASL: While the NSC East-leading New York Cosmos (18-7) were defeating San Diego 5-0, the other division leaders won five of seven games. NSC West-leader Seattle (22-5) accounted for one loss—they fell to Philadelphia. 1-0—but clinched a playoff spot by defeating Toronto 3-1. The other loser, ASC Central leader Chicago (19-6), also ensured itself a berth by defeating Detroit 2-1 in a shootout before falling to Edmonton 2-1. Fort Lauderdale (15-10), which beat New England 3-0, maintained its slim lead in the ASC East, and California (12-13), which didn't play, maintained a one-point lead in the ASC West. NSC Central-leading Dallas (13-11) won twice, shutting out Memphis 2-0 and beating the Express 2-1.
