Sims set state class AAA one-season records with 2,010 yards rushing, 33 touchdowns and 206 points for 12-1 Sunny-side High. The 5'10", 205-pound senior had his best game against Santa Rita High, with 260 yards and five TDs.

Strong, 86, a retired school principal who is coached by his wife, Bev, won the North American 85-and-over tennis championship in Charlottesville, Va. He defeated Travis Smith of Wharton, Texas 6-1, 0-6, 6-3 in the finals.

Troy, a freshman striker, and Jerry, a senior link-forward, led the Fleetwood Area High soccer team to a 32-0-0 record and its second state title in three years. Troy was Fleetwood's top scorer with 40 goals, probably a national freshman record, while Jerry, with 37 goals, set what is believed to be a U.S. high school mark for assists in a season with 43, 12 of them on goals by Troy. Jerry's 103 career assists broke the school record of 66 set by his brother Doug between 1975 and 1978.

Alpenia, a 5'3" sophomore setter, helped the Azusa Pacific College volleyball team win 28 of 34 regular-season matches and the NAIA title. She was named MVP of the national tournament, in which Azusa beat East Texas State in the finals.
