Fernando, 16, won the national Junior Olympic boxing title in the 165-pound class in Santa Clara, Calif. By stopping Simon Johnson of Gaylord, Mich. in the second round, he became the only fighter to score a knockout in the finals.

Kenny, a 5'7", 155-pound junior at Central Preston High, rushed for 1,834 yards on 182 carries and scored a state-high 172 points on 28 TDs and a pair of two-point conversions. His touchdown runs averaged 39 yards.

Turner, 24, a member of U.S. canoe and kayak teams since 1973, won or was on victorious teams in all six women's kayaking events at the national championships on Lake Sebago, N.Y. Her wins were in three 500-meter and three 5,000 races.

Gordon, 29, a laboratory technologist, defeated Hannelore Hoplitschek of West Germany 602-557 to win the women's championship at the 16th World Cup Bowling tournament in Jakarta. She rolled games of 223, 189 and 190 in the finals.

Charlie, 10, set five state swimming records for the 9-10 boys' age group at a meet in Cincinnati. The marks came in the 50-yard (26.35 seconds), 100 (57.92) and 200 (2:09.49) freestyles, the 50 fly (29.06) and the 200 IM (2:22.72).

Bobby, a senior center-back, has led Forsythe Country Day to two consecutive state soccer titles and a 43-game unbeaten streak with his defensive play. He was selected as the 1980 high school player of the year in North Carolina.
