Vanidestine, a sophomore outfielder for the University of Maine, hit five consecutive doubles in a 15-9 loss to Miami to set an NCAA Division I record. The previous mark of four doubles in a game was shared by three players.

Braatz, 24, and Horns, 20, won the men's and women's divisions at the three-day Yukon Jack World Snowshoe Championship race in Wisconsin. An insurance actuary, Braatz defeated two-time winner Barney Klecker by 12½ minutes, completing the 83-mile course between Superior and Rice Lake in 11:19:12. Horns, a junior predental student at the University of Minnesota and Klecker's fiancèe, finished in 14:50:40 to break by 2:36:16 the women's mark set last year by Joyce Haugen.

Felicia, 14, a 5'5" forward for Old West End Junior High, got 24.2 points and 14.6 rebounds a game to pace the Golden Bears to both an undefeated season (17-0) and a City League championship for the second year in a row.

Doug, 17, a center on the Jesuit High ice hockey team, scored five goals in a 10-2 victory over Sunset High, three of them in a span of 28 seconds in the second period. He had 27 goals for the season to help lead the Crusaders to a 20-5-1 record.

Nieman, 33, an architect, won the men's individual title at the U.S. Invitational Modern Pentathlon meet. He placed first in the 300-meter swim and in pistol shooting, fourth in fencing, 21st in the equestrian event and 32nd in the 4-km. run.
