Stubbs, a 6'2" sophomore first baseman at Virginia Tech, led the Hokies to a 48-9 season by hitting 29 home runs, tying the NCAA single-season record. He also had a .417 average, 83 RBIs, 59 walks and 34 steals (in 37 attempts).

Hankins, a 36-year-old grocery-store department manager, defeated Aileen McComas of Blue Springs, Mo. to win her third straight women's open title at the World Cow-Chip Contest in Beaver, Okla. Her winning toss was 91'5".

Tony, 13, won six events at the Eastern Zone Age-Group Swimming Championships in Philadelphia. Among his wins were a 12-and-under national record of 58.04 in the 100-yard backstroke and a second best ever of 58.07 in the 100 IM.

Terri, a junior at New Caney High, established a national girls' high school record with a triple jump of 40'9½" at the state Class 4A track and field meet. She surpassed the mark of 40'1½" set by Charlotte Reese of Columbia, S.C. last year.

EUGENE, ORE.
Ramsey, 24, a petty officer on the U.S.S. Midway, beat 213 others with a time of 33:10 in the on-ship Gonzo Memorial 10-km. run. The race, held in intense heat on the Indian Ocean, covered 21 laps of the carrier's flight deck.
