Lyttle, 25, a 5'10", 215-pound machinist, pinned Bruce Way of Escondido, Calif. "in a flash" to win the heavyweight division at the national amateur arm-wrestling championships in La Mirada, Calif. It was his third national amateur title.

Kelly, who recently finished her sophomore year at Cathedral High, won four events and the all-around title at the girls' state gymnastics finals. She had a 9.10 in the floor exercise, a 9.00 on the beam and 9.35s on the vault and uneven bars.

Keener, 22, a relief pitcher at Kentucky, allowed only four earned runs in 71 innings to lead the NCAA's Division I with a 0.51 ERA. He had a 13-1 record and paced the Wildcats to a 39-16-1 season and their most wins ever.

Diane, then a junior at Lansingburgh High, won both the 800-and 1,500-meter runs at the state high school meet. During the indoor season she ran the nation's fastest 800 meters (2:09.2) and 1,000 yards (2:29.0) among high school girls.

Newman, a junior geology major at Arizona State, bicycled the 2,990 miles between Santa Monica, Calif. and New York City in 10 days, 20 hours to surpass the U.S. Cycling Federation cross-country record set by John Marino of Costa Mesa, Calif. in 1980 by one day, seven hours, 41 minutes. Dickey, a 71-year-old retired rehabilitation instructor, also biked across the nation, from Palo Alto to his 50th reunion at Amherst (Mass.) College, in tandem with an Amherst senior. Their trip took six weeks.
