WHERE EAST MEETS WEST

Don't panic, folks, the omnipresent Japanese have not taken over American baseball, though an impressionable patriot might conclude this after viewing the spring training scene below. Last year four Japanese teams worked out with clubs in the U.S., including the Hanshin Tigers (shown here) with the Cleveland Indians in Tucson.

In Tempe, a pitcher warms up under the watchful eyes of fans on the bluff above, while in Scottsdale, an American export wears a foreign uniform far from home.

The long arms of a saguaro cactus in Phoenix and the long lenses of a contingent of Japanese press photographers in Tucson create an unusual spring training atmosphere.
