Russell, 14, scored 393 of a possible 400 points in four air-gun shooting positions, including a record 100 in the sitting position, and defeated more than 300 competitors to win the International BB Gun Championships in Clarksville, Tenn.

Theresa, a 1982 graduate of East Providence Senior High, successfully defended three individual titles despite a steady downpour at the state girls' track championships: the 100 (12.6) and 200 meters (27.0) and the long jump (17'6").

Arkley, 40, led the Osborn and Ulland team to its third straight veterans' triumph and third place overall in the 75-mile Ski to Sea relay, which begins on Mt. Baker and, after skiing, running, biking, kayaking and sailing legs, ends on Bellingham Bay.

WHITTIER, CALIF.
Munatones, 20, a junior-to-be at Harvard, won the quadrennial International Long Distance Swimming Championship on Lake Windermere in England. He swam the 25-km. course in 6:11:45, breaking the men's record by 13:15.

BARBARA LEVONAITIS
MIDDLESEX, N.J.
Barbara, 12, the first girl to play in the Middlesex Little League, pitched the Cubs to the league championship with an 11-0 record and 127 strikeouts, both league records. She won three state tournament games before losing 5-2 to North Hunterdon.

NEW YORK CITY
Nitz, 25, won two of five cycling gold medals at the National Sports Festival in Indianapolis. At the national championships the following week in Kenosha, Wis., he won three of five events: the kilometer time trial and the individual and team pursuit.
