Harper, 65, a prep school headmaster, became the oldest person to swim the English Channel, breaking the 1979 record of James (Doc) Counsilman, then 58. Harper crossed from Dover to Cap Blanc Nez, France in 13 hours, 40 minutes.

Annette and Jeanette, 18-year-old twins and June graduates of Winyah High, combined for all 68 of their team's points as the Gators won their second straight state AAA girls' track championship. Annette placed first in the triple jump with a 40'10¾" leap—Jeanette was second—and won the long jump with a state-record 19'11½". Jeanette established a state record in the 200 meters (24.5)—Annette finished second—and edged her sister in the 100, though they had the same clocking (12.2).
