Birmingham, 37, a junior high science teacher, ran from Fort Kent, Maine to Key West in 47 days, five hours to break Richard Innamorato's 1976 record for the 2,254-mile Eastern Seaboard run by 24 days. Birmingham averaged 47.2 miles a day.

Shirley, 12, and Yvette, 10, both members of the Motor City Track Club, brought home six national championships between them at the TFA nationals in St. Louis. In girls' 12-and-under competition Shirley won the 200-meter (25.5) and 400-meter (58.9) dashes and ran first leg on the winning 4 x 100 relay team (52.9). Yvette, competing in the 10-and-under category, was first in the 100 (13.5) and 200 (28.5) and anchored the winning 4 x 100 relay team (59.2).

Tab, at 15 by far the youngest team member, scored the winning goal at 5:00 of overtime to lead the U.S. junior (under-19) soccer squad to a 3-1 semifinal upset of Guatemala in the World Youth Cup qualifying tournament in Guatemala City.

Jay, a 1982 graduate of East Noble High, had a senior-year pitching record of 13-1, with a 0.51 ERA, and stole 26 bases in 28 attempts. Over four years he went 31-4, with 390 strikeouts in 242 innings, and batted .421, with 102 RBIs.
