Mark, a senior quarterback for Independence High, rushed for four TDs and completed 48 of 73 passes for 916 yards and six touchdowns in two last-minute wins over South Mecklenburg (49-48) and West Mecklenburg (40-39).

Mary, a ninth-grader at New Stuyahok School, is undefeated in the 24 regular-season cross-country races and three seven-mile road races she has run since fifth grade. She also finished second in a state Region I cross-country meet.

Arno, a senior at Laramie High, defeated Cheyenne Central's Todd Dray 6-0, 6-2 to win his second straight Wyoming boys' high school singles title. Arno, unbeaten in singles since the state finals of his sophomore year, has won his last 56 matches.

EASTVILLE, VA.
Rhodes, 54, a Red Cross water safety instructor, overcame 15-knot winds, four-foot swells and jellyfish stings to become the first person to swim the 17 miles across the mouth of Chesapeake Bay without relief. The transit took 11 hours.

IPSWICH, MASS.
Bryan, 21, a Dartmouth senior, scored three goals in the U.S.'s 10-7 overtime defeat of Australia in the finals of the Brine World Lacrosse Cup. She scored 14 goals in the six-game tournament and has 84 in her three-year college career.

Chapson, 80, broke two 80-and-over records—on his birthday—by more than 35 seconds each when he ran a 2:53.5 800 meters and a 6:12.2 1,500 meters. A track star at Colorado A&M in the mid-'20s, he holds 41 age-group records.
