Lawson, a righthand-hitting senior third baseman for Phillips University, hit 33 home runs in 51 games for the Haymakers this season to establish an NAIA single-season record. He also drove in 91 runs and had a .506 batting average.

Chinh, a seventh-grader at Bellflower High whose family left Vietnam in 1978, made 23 of 25 free throws to win the 10-to-11-year-old girls' division of the Elks National Freethrow Contest in Indianapolis over 11 other national finalists.

Quier, 51, a hydraulic repairman, won his sixth U.S. Weightlifting Federation title in eight years, the age 50-to-54 123-pound crown, in Cleveland. He had lifts of 121 pounds in the snatch and 148 pounds in the clean and jerk.

Michele, a senior right-handed pitcher, led Vandebilt Catholic High to a four-year 112-1 record and four straight state Class AA girls' softball titles. She won 88 games without a loss, the best high school girls' career record ever.

McCrory and Whitaker, both 19 and 1982 U.S. amateur champions, won gold medals at the World Boxing Championships in Reno. McCrory, whose older brother Milton is the WBC's No. 1-ranked welterweight, scored a split decision over Yuri Alexandrov of the Soviet Union in the 112-pound class. Whitaker won a unanimous decision over Angel Herrera of Cuba in the 132-pound class, avenging a loss to Herrera in the finals of the '82 world championships.
