Alfie, a 17-year-old center, helped the Portland (Ore.) Winter Hawks to the Memorial Cup major junior hockey title, which never had been won by a U.S. team. He had five goals and three assists and was named the tournament's MVP.

Anthony, a senior, led the DeLand High weightlifting team to the state 4A title. He won the 165-pound class with a bench press of 385 pounds and a clean and jerk of 270 for a 655-pound total, 10 shy of the meet's best regardless of weight class.

Bertling, a 75-year-old retired foundry foreman, made successive holes in one at the Hansen Park Golf Course in Wauwatosa, Wis. Using an eight-iron, he aced the par-3, 90-yard 6th and then, with the same club, the par-3, 100-yard 7th.

Kuhlman, a Georgetown University senior and the tournament's second seed, defeated top-seeded Sandra Elliott of Northern Colorado 6-4, 6-4 to win the singles title at the NCAA Division II women's tennis championships in Covina, Calif.

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA
Thibodeau, 32, the cross-country skiing and running coach at the University of Alaska-Anchorage, won the 60-Minute Challenge race in Anchorage. He ran 11 miles in the allotted time, a mile farther than the runners-up.

O'Brien, a 6-foot senior center for Clark University in Worcester, Mass., averaged 22.5 points and 14 rebounds per game to earn NCAA Division III Player of the Year honors from the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.
