Rippy and Hairston, both juniors at Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio, led the Purple Raiders to the NCAA Division III track and field championship by finishing first and second, respectively, in the 100 and 200 meters and running the third and anchor legs for the 4 X 100 relay team. Rippy's wins—he ran 10.56 in the 100 and 21.18 in the 200—made him Mount Union's first individual national champion. Hairston's times were 10.57 and 21.56. The relay team also finished first, in 40.79.

RENFREW, PA.
Eaton, 22, became the first American amateur cyclist to win a major (category A) international stage race, in this case the 12-day pro-am Milk Race in Britain. He covered the 1,056 miles in 42:22:23 for an average speed of 25 mph.

MAX MOLOCK
WINONA, MINN.
Molock, 73, recently retired after coaching the St. Mary's College baseball team for 40 years, during which it won 12 conference titles and had a 440-356 record. Molock's grandson, Daniel Dieterman, played shortstop on his last team.

KIM MOE
EUGENE, ORE.
Kim, a senior at Winston Churchill High, finished her four-year softball career with 46 shutouts and 21 no-hitters, the top marks ever by a girl high school pitcher. The Lancers finished the season at 28-2 and won their fourth straight state title.

CLAY PARRISH
RUSSELLVILLE, KY.
Clay, a junior centerfielder at Russellville High, went 4 for 5 in a 31-3 win over Butler County High, with three home runs, including two grand slams, and 11 RBIs. During the 14-game season he hit 11 homers and drove in 27 runs.
