Brown, who is a 56-year-old auto mechanic, relied on his spinning hook to bowl games of 300, 300, and 279 for an 879 series at the Blackstone Bowl. According to the American Bowling Congress, it was the third-highest series in history.

GARY NICKLAUS
NORTH PALM BEACH, FLA.
Gary, 14, whose father has won some golf tournaments, shot a five-over-par 149 to lead the Benjamin School to the state high school team championship. Earlier he had shot a one-under-par 71 to win the county junior high title.

MARTY HAWS
MIDVALE, UTAH
Haws, a junior at Hill-crest High, won the 100-meter dash (11.04) and ran legs on the winning 4 X 100 and 4 X 400 relays to pace his team to its third state track and field title. He also played for the Huskies' state baseball champs.

SHERRY SEVALL
PORTLAND, ORE.
Sevall, 35, who is girls' tennis coach at Sunset High, guided the Apollos to their sixth consecutive girls' championship at the state tournament. Under Sevall, the Apollos have had an 82-1 dual-match record over five years and a 16-0 mark this year.

Aletha and Allison, both seniors at Southside High, led the Confederettes to their third consecutive Arkansas Class AAAA girls' track and field championship in Jacksonville. Allison won the 1,600 (5:24) and the 3,200 meters (11:17) and holds the girls' state high school record in the 3,200 with a clocking of 11:01.3. Aletha was also a double winner, in the 200 (25.2), in which she was undefeated this year, and the 400 (59.0). She also was second in the 100 with a time of 12.4.
