Johnson, a junior at Hampton Institute, ran the 60-yard dash in 6.08 at the NAIA indoor track and field championships in Kansas City. It was the fastest 60 in NAIA history and the fourth-fastest clocking in the world this year.

Carmichael, 34, a banker, was the women's winner in the seventh annual Empire State Building Run Up. She scaled the 1,575 steps—the race ends at the 86th floor of the 102-story building—in 13:32, setting the women's record.

Mike, a senior at Boston College High, set a national high school indoor record of 1:02.4 in the 500-meter run at the Class A meet. The next day, at the same meet, he ran 600 yards in 1:11.2, the second-fastest schoolboy clocking ever.

KURT SCHLEICHER
BETHANY, CONN.
Kurt, a 12-year-old hockey center, led the Cheshire Pee Wees to a third straight 11-and-12-year-old state title by scoring five goals in the 6-2 win over Mid-Fairfield. He has had more than 60 goals in each of the past three seasons.

Hayward, 50, won two titles, the 50-and-over singles and, with 40-year-old Ellen Bryant, the 40-and-over doubles, at the USTA senior indoor tournament in Salt Lake City. The wins raised Hayward's total of national titles to 21.

Marco, an eighth-grader at Trinity School, finished third at the U.S. Junior (players 21 or younger) Open chess tournament in Minneapolis. In 1983 he was named the top 13-year-old player in the U.S. and has earned 2,115 rating points.
