McKee, 45, an insurance executive, defeated 21-year-old Steve Stapleton 9-21, 21-14, 11-10 to win the Memphis handball championship. He's the reigning Tennessee over-40 champion and won the national over-40 singles crown in 1979.
Hird, a 25-year-old library aide, ran a 30-km race in Albany, N.Y. in 1:45:15 to surpass by 2¼ minutes the American women's point-to-point record set by Ellen Hart of Boulder, Colo. in 1982. On the same day, Schwam, 31, a running-shoe representative, ran what's believed to be an American women's best of 4:43:59 in winning the 60-km Knickerbocker run in New York. The old mark of 5:00:16 was held by Beth Chadwick of New York, who was second this time in 4:55:55.

Bruno, a senior center on the Hudson Catholic High hockey team, scored six goals and had five assists in his last game, a 15-0 defeat of Millburn High, to set a state high school record for goals in a season (66) and tie the mark for points (111).
