Carlton, 18, won the state Class AAA heavyweight wrestling title with a 10-0 record, even though his school, Greater Johnstown High, has no wrestling program. Before the state tournament, he'd never wrestled in a high school bout.

Kleinert, a 28-year-old Wall Street trader, upset seven-time defending titlist Doug Russell 6-4, 6-7, 6-1 to win his first national open platform tennis singles title. A month earlier, Kleinert and Russell had won the national doubles crown.

Kristy, a senior, and Nicole, a sophomore, led Sahuaro High to the Class AAA softball championship, pitching in every game of the Cougars' 25-2 season. Kristy hurled three no-hitters en route to a 12-2 record and had an earned run average of 0.69 and 91 strikeouts in 91 innings. Nicole pitched a one-hitter while amassing a 13-0 record, a 0.25 ERA and 32 whiffs in 85 innings. When not pitching, Kristy played shortstop and batted .429; Nicole was a rightfielder and hit .364.

Vihljalmsson, a junior premed major at Texas, threw the javelin 303'1" to break the 14-year-old NCAA record set by Mark Murro, then of Arizona State. Vihljalmsson is considered to be Iceland's best hope for an Olympic medal.

BOWLING GREEN, OHIO
Steve, a senior forward for the Bowling Green High hockey team, set a national Class A record with 65 goals (he also had 36 assists) as he led the 30-1 Bobcats to the state title. He has played on five state championship teams since 1977.
