Housman, 72, a retired meat packer, won his second national over-70 handball title of the year, defeating Steve Subak of Minneapolis 21-19, 21-12 for the singles championship. In April, Housman and Bill Luftman won the doubles crown.

Michael, 9, a defenseman for the 35-19-8 Holliston Mites in the 7- to 9-year-old division of the Westboro ice hockey league, had 114 goals and 43 assists this season. In 1982-83 he racked up 113 goals and 104 assists in 52 games.

Hoover, a senior pitcher for Fresno State, set NCAA records for complete games in a season (18) and career (41), breaking marks set by the White Sox' Floyd Bannister while at Arizona State (17) and Herb Pryor at UNLV (40).

Rossmann, a sophomore at Odessa (junior) College, swept the NJCAA national gymnastic championships, winning all five titles: vault, uneven bars, floor, all-around and beam, in which she set a national J.C. scoring record, averaging 9.2.

NORTH HOLLYWOOD, CALIF.

Cascio, 20, a racquetball teaching pro, and Drexler, 18, a snack-bar attendant, fought through a draw of eight regional champions to win the men's and women's amateur titles, respectively, in the Ektelon national racquetball championship in Anaheim, Calif. Cascio won for the first time in four trips to the nationals, defeating Cliff Swain of Braintree, Mass. 15-7, 15-7 in the finals. Drexler overcame a 15-14 first-game loss in the title match to edge Cindy Baxter of Lewistown, Pa. 14-15, 15-7, 15-11.
