Brown, 50, captured the 50-, 100- and 200-meter backstrokes in a Christ-church, New Zealand meet and set a world 50-and-over standard of 1:12.24 for the 100. In his age-group, he also holds the 50- and 200-meter backstroke records.

WATERLOO, IOWA
Francis, 18, set a national high school and teenage 123-pound record in the bench press with a lift of 294.87 pounds at the National High School Powerlifting Championships, surpassing the old best, set by Randall Kea in 1981, by 2.87 pounds.

Susan, a sixth-grader at Stout Intermediate, did 1,100 sit-ups in 54 minutes at an elementary school track meet, beating Dorice Harris, her closest rival, by 889. Last year Susan managed to do 1,025 sit-ups in 80 minutes.

MERETA, TEXAS
Adam, a sophomore left-handed pitcher, had a hand in all 21 outs in Wall High's seven-inning 8-0 win over San Saba High. He struck out 18 batters, caught one fly and fielded two grounders. Adam was 4-3 for the season with a 1.40 ERA.

HAMDEN, CONN.
Valarie and Lois were standouts at the Arkansas Class AAAA-East and New England Women's Track and Field Championships, respectively. Valarie, a Jonesboro High sophomore, scored 32½ of her school's meet-winning 66 points as she won the 100 and 200 meters, long jump, and 100 and 300 hurdles. Lois, a junior at Southern Connecticut State, won the heptathlon with firsts in the 200, long jump and javelin throw, seconds in the 100, high jump and shotput, and a third place in the 800.
